Your Mentee’s Mental Health

A child’s mental health affects every aspect of their life – relationships, physical health, and academics.  Learning about mental health and how to support a young person if they are struggling with a mental health condition is an essential skill for mentoring.

Central Texas’ National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has been changing the way our community addresses mental health through innovative education, support and advocacy programs since 1984.  NAMI provides valuable information to Seedling Mentors about mental health conditions, signs and symptoms, statistics,  and on how we can support our mentees if they are struggling with mental health issues

Seedling mentors can help their mentees who are struggling by:

  • Validating the mentees feelings with empathy and acceptance
  • Acknowledging the reality of your mentee’s experience (What is real and true to them)
  • Creating a safe space for open communication, listening
  • Together with your mentee, seeking support from the school contact and campus resources

Everyone has mental health struggles now and again.  Talking openly about mental health can reduce stigmas and encourage those around us to be more willing to ask for the support they need.  Your Seedling Mentor Director is available if you would like additional information and resources.
