Internships & Employment Opportunities for Teens

As we enter the spring semester, many Austin-area internship programs are opening applications for summer and year-round positions. This is a great time for mentors to talk with mentees about career interests and upcoming opportunities. 

City of Austin Internships

  • Youth Initiatives Officer Internship Opportunities:This 6-week paid internship is for Austin ,-area high school students (15-18 years old). Application window begins on January 28, 2026. 
  • Youth Forest Council: A paid, year-long internship (ages 16–20) focused on public service and natural resources.
  • Austin Public Library: A website highlighting Austin-area internships for teens with Austin Public Health and Parks & Recreation. 
  • Lifeguarding in Austin:Seasonal/temporary lifeguarding positions available to teens 15 years and older. Sign up to get trained this spring semester and be ready to work by Memorial Day. Training is free, and classes fill up quickly. 

Local Nonprofits

  • Ladders for Leaders: An organization that connects kids 16-18 years old with professional employment ($12 per hour, 20 hours per week), mostly serving Round Rock and Williamson County.
  • E4 Youth:Paid programs such as Creative Mentors and Shadow the Pros.
  • Rodeo Austin: Seasonal early spring internship.

School Programs

How Mentors Can Help

  • Check in with school counselors for the latest deadlines.  
  • Review program websites together—many summer internships open in late fall and winter. 
  • Support mentees in setting up job search profiles, practicing résumés, and preparing for interviews.

Encourage mentees to explore these programs early—many fill quickly, and January is the perfect month to get ready!  Most of these opportunities are part-time paid jobs that can lead to full-time opportunities, or at least create their own personal network.
