  • Make the Most of Academics
Build strong relationships-— teachers can provide guidance, mentorship, and college application insight. Keep copies of your best essays and projects for college applications. Focus on challenging yourself and growing at your own pace.
  • Think about College Early (but don’t let it make you crazy!)
It is helpful to start exploring options early for college or trade schools. Find dual credit courses that count towards college credits, and visit your school’s College and Career Center.By senior year, you’ll be grateful you started early!
  • Be Yourself
Finding where you fit in can be overwhelming. Focus on people and activities that genuinely interest you. Live in the moment —you’ll enjoy your experience much more.
  • Be Open (you don’t have to have it all figured out!)
Many people explore different paths before finding the right fit or even change their careers over time. You don’t have to feel tied to one – stay open to new opportunities and experiences.
  • Learn Test Taking Strategies
There are many test taking strategies you can learn to get ready for the STAAR, EOC, orTSI tests. ASK your counselors and teachers for resources if you need them.
  • Take Care of Yourself
High school can be exhausting, and it will catch up with you if you don’t get enough rest. Prioritize sleep (teenagers need 8-10 hours), nutrition, hydration, and exercise—these habits will benefit you for a lifetime.
  • Look at the Big Picture
It’s easy to get caught up in high school’s social dynamics, but don’t limit yourself to one friend group. Meeting people with different interests broadens your perspective and fosters open-mindedness.
  •  Ask for Advice
Some lessons come through experience, but seeking advice can make your journey smoother. Even a simple question can lead to a meaningful conversation or unexpected friendship. Do your best to make the decisions that are right for you.
  • Ask for Help
Whether you’re struggling academically, socially, or emotionally, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. Teachers, counselors, family, and friends are there to help. Asking for help is a sign of strength.
